Why am I an IBCLC?

Breastfeeding had been successful and a joy for me with my oldest son, born in 1985. On August 24th of 1994 I gave birth to my second son and I knew I would be successful with him as well. Little did I know how difficult that would be and how I would use my experiences in the future.   The picture in the banner above is that little boy at 3 days of age - just before the world I knew changed in the most dramatic way.

Over a period of 3 1/2 months I struggled to care for myself, my 9 yr old son and my baby (who had a dysfunctional suck and a bubble palate that caused severe nipple trauma). Battling sleep deprivation and post-partum depression, I was also challenged by mastitis in both breasts that refused to resolve even with antibiotics, plugged ducts, low milk supply, then an over-supply of milk, and pumping 10-12 times a day as directed by my Lactation Consultant and Doctor (to avoid potential abscess due to the severe mastitis).  I believed in the benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby so I kept working to overcome our struggles.

I was truly blessed to find a wonderful Lactation Consultant to assist me in my struggle. She supported me in my decision to continue with my efforts (even when family advised me to give up). With her help we worked to correct my son's suck issues and worked towards getting him back on the breast. When I wavered, she supported me in choosing what was best for me - even if that meant weaning. She was a life-line for me and what I learned then, I still use today.

In October of 1994, Ben finally went back to breast with no signs of nipple confusion, but he still needed some more time to refine his sucking abilities and still required some supplementation. In December of 1994 my son and I finally got past all of our challenges and were, at long last, nursing successfully and happily with no bottles - and best of all - pain free! The advantages of breastfeeding finally made themselves known - convenience, bonding, warmth, love and a very healthy baby.

As a result of our struggles and everything I learned, I found a field I hadn't known existed (Lactation Consulting). I vowed to do what I could to assist other mothers in overcoming their breastfeeding challenges. Thus, thanks to a baby with a dysfunctional suck and a fabulous LC, I found my calling - my passion - being a Lactation Consultant.

Some of the most important things I can offer to new moms and dads are:
Caring support, the ability to work with you on your terms, encouragement to trust your mama and daddy hearts, evidenced based research and the skills to assist you and your baby to be successful in your journey of learning about each other in whatever form that may be.
